During Summer 2015, I was contacted by MARTA Army's then "mastermind" Simon Berrebi. We discussed a project to post schedules at bus stops I was working on independently, named "TimelyTrip". At the time, the MARTA Army original leaders were looking for a launch initiative, and I thought joining forces would improve the chances for the bus stop schedule project to succeed, so I was admitted as a co-founder! What projects have you been involved with in MARTA Army and what did you enjoy about working on them? I maintain the software that powers MARTA Army's interactive maps and bus schedules and that supports Operations TimelyTrip and Bus Stop Census, almost a dream for transit computer nerds! As board treasurer, I make sure our spending stays in check, and I support initiatives that our other volunteers put together. Share one of your favorite MARTA stories? One morning, I ended up on the same bus to Alpharetta as 3 co-workers and 2 other acquaintances, it felt like a party! I love running into people I know while taking transit. What do you enjoy doing when you are not working or volunteering? I have a black belt in aikido, play the piano, and enjoy riding the bike. Why are you are part of MARTA Army? While many enjoy speculating about MARTA expansions, MARTA Army really encourages hands-on action to promote and improve our present transit system. I’ve seen how increasingly important MARTA has become, as the city continues to grow and densify. While MARTA has become increasingly more critical to meet the transportation needs of residents and visitors alike, the broad support for MARTA to remain in good operations has not always matched its crucial place in the transportation network of Atlanta. We see many MARTA trains and buses operating at less than desired frequencies, train stations in need of more cleanings, bus stops without shelters, service cuts, and overcrowded trains during sporting events. MARTA has addressed many of these concerns that the public faces, with its recent 2026 NextGen Bus Network Redesign - which includes faster frequencies and Georgia’s first BRT lanes, among other solutions, and new trains are coming into service within 2026. However, there still remains a gap between the public’s needs and MARTA’s deliverables. MARTA Army is in the position to close this communication gap between the public and MARTA, so that the residents and visitors to Atlanta can use the public transportation of tomorrow that they dream of today. White is a professor of history at Clayton State University. She first moved to Atlanta in 2001 to attend graduate school at Emory University. Prior to her position at Clayton State, she taught at Clark Atlanta University and Georgia State University. Carol is passionately committed to service in her community and on her campus. She has served in leadership positions with the Clayton State University chapter of the American Association of University Professors, as well as on the board of the Friends of the East Atlanta Library. She's been a Board of Advisor Member at MARTA Army since 2023. Originally from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Courtney holds a B.A. in International Studies from Louisiana State University and an MPH in Behavioral and Community Health from the Louisiana Health Sciences Center in New Orleans, LA. She's passionate about transit-oriented development and equity in transportation, and is an active member of the Women’s Affordable Housing Network.
